Before buying this disc, you should be aware that there is a technical glitch in the slow movement of the Rachmaninoff Sonata. For a few seconds, a second cello apppears to be playing in the right channel. If you can overlook this, there is much to enjoy in this CD. This is probably the best performance of the Rachmaninoff Sonata that I have /5(4).

The selections herein are pure Rachmaninoff. The G minor Sonata, Op is one of the most passionate romantic pieces in the repertoire. The performances are commendable. I read in a biography of Rachmaninoff that he advised balance in his works for cello and piano --that they are not written for piano with cello accompaniment/5(26).

Rachmaninoff's music is warm, subtle almost romantic especially "allegro scherzando" & "iii andante" & iv allegro mosso-moderato". Lucky for me I got the extended edition with 3 bonus tracks, Shostakovich -cello sonata -very lyrical with both players giving it an excellent performance -charming/5(8).

Rachmaniniov disliked calling the work a cello sonata as he’d written music making the two instruments equals. Cellist Marina Tarasova and pianist Alexander Polezhaev couple this challenging sonata with short romantic masterpieces by Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. Sergei Rachmaninov. 7. Vunris says:
The common wisdom on Rachmaninov's Sonata for Cello and Piano is that it is really a piano sonata with cello accompaniment. While this assessment may be a slight exaggeration, it cannot be denied the piano is the dominant instrument in the work.

Sergey Rachmaninov, Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Op. 19 [] Rachmaninov's late-Romantic outpourings are very well suited to the cello, although the piano has to do the hardest work in this sonata. The composer's only cello sonata dates from the same period as his famous Piano Concerto No. 2.
